Glazed Units

Double glazed units can be made to a range of shapes and sizes that are used within the external building envelope for insulated spaces. Essentially you are creating an insulating panel by trapping a gas or air cavity between two pieces of glass. These pieces of glass can be toughened or laminated depending on the application. Gases used for insulation are Air, Argon or Krypton, each more suited to different applications and glass specifications.

Spacer bars available range from aluminium spacers to warm edge spacer bars for improved thermal performance and reduced cold bridging. Warm edge spacers can come in a range of colours to match the RAL colour reference, but black is the most popular in order to match the colour of structural silicone and modern dark framings.

Toughened and Laminated Glazing

Double glazed units using safety glasses, such as toughened or laminated glazing, can be used within insulated frames for opening windows and external doors, as well as fixed frameless structural glass. By integrating a toughened laminated glass unit as one of the panels, a double glazed unit can be used in structural glass elements, such as glass floors and walls.

The specific Ug value (centre pane thermal performance) of the glass units needs to be calculated per double glazed unit and will depend on the glass specification, spacer bar used, gas filling and size of the glass unit. London Architectural Glass can calculate this for you easily and quickly for use in SAP calculations or Building Regulations to ensure compliance. Generally, the Ug value of a double-glazed unit can range from 1.0W/m2K to 1.4W/m2K.

Specialist glass finishes or coatings, such as solar control or decorative finishes, can easily be used within these insulated glass units to achieve the performance or appearance required.
